Different Types of Battery Isolators
Battery isolators enable you to discharge one battery and not have to worry about discharging your second battery. Many people install second batteries in their vehicles for different reasons, and it is imperative that you also choose the proper battery isolator. The two main types of battery isolators available are the diode based isolator and the relay solenoid isolator.
Diode Based Isolators
These isolators operate without much hassle and last a very long time. One disadvantage to using these isolators is they cause voltage loss since they do not charge quite as high when they are not connected directly to the alternator. However, these isolators are very reliable and trouble-free.
Relay Solenoid Isolators
These isolators use extremely high voltage to control the flow of the current. The solenoids are split into four chambers, and the first chamber is in control of whether the rest of the battery is connected to the charging system. There is no voltage loss when using them, so that is one advantage that they have over the diode isolators. They also allow a complete disconnect from the amplifiers which is a great safety precaution; however, these isolators are not as reliable as the diode isolators are.
